For a while there, it seemed like one-of-a-kind and bespoke stationary and letterpress was the next big thing, taking its place alongside mini-cupcakes, handmade soaps and body rubs and super-stylized henna tattoos as the thing that was going to define Williamsburg, Brooklyn. But spending time browsing the works of creator Danielle Maslan’s Foxtail Press convinced us that this is anything but trendy. This is knock-out gorgeousness pure and simple. It’s timeless stuff. After all, taking the time to select and write a card in the age of Twitter and texting says a lot. A whole lot.
A&F: Tell us about your collection.
Foxtail Press: My collection is made up of imagery that I have grown to love through out the years. I draw/ paint images that I would want to buy, display, covet and hope others would want as well. This way, when one of my cards is received, the card itself becomes the gift. A pocket size piece of art with a personal note inside. My collection is made up
A&F: When did you start?
Foxtail Press: I started in November 2009. I debuted in May 2010 at the National Stationary Show, although I have been making art for years.
A&F: What inspires you?
Foxtail Press: My friends and old memories inspire me a bunch. Everything else from patterns, lines, gritty rust-covered industrial structures in the middle of Winter to YouTube videos.

A&F: Do you start a project knowing what you want it to look like or do you just wing it?
Foxtail Press: Sometimes I have a plan, ideas or sketches. Other times I just start doodling and see what happens. I have so many ideas in my head that I sometimes just create to get them out of my system. A lot of the time my work evolves by the time it is finished and is very different than what I started with. It’s a very intuitive approach. As far as the mediums that I use – it’s kind of like “whatever it calls for”, much like cooking.
A&F: Receiving a handwritten letter is so rare these days – is it hard to sell cards and stationary in a world of email and text messaging?
Foxtail Press: I don’t think email/ e-cards can ever replace a handwritten note in the mail. Plus, its tactile, you can hold it, feel it, display it and keep it forever with out “accidentally” discarding it. I treasure them so much more as I think most people would. Plus, since we are able to communicate so easily through email now, it makes my cards THAT much more special to send and receive.
A&F: What do you like about selling at Artists & Fleas?
Foxtail Press: The quality of goods at the market, being in the heart of Williamsburg, the friendly laid-back and fun environment make this an exciting place.

Check out the goods from Foxtail Press at Artists & Fleas Indoor Artist, Designer & Vintage Market this weekend where you can also place a custom order. You can also become a fan on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.
