Christine Herbeck is something of a well-known secret in Williamsburg, giving her by-appointment-only hair and make-up make-overs behind closed doors. The world has changed and Herbeck’s Killerdoos holds court at Artists & Fleas indefinitely beginning August 14th so you have yet another way to give yourself a new look at Brooklyn’s favorite hang-out.
Artists & Fleas: How did you come up with the name Killerdoos?
Killerdoos: It’s a name my web designer (Jo Ortiz), his wife and I came up with as a play on words to best describe my style. I also do hair and make-up for film and fashion and the name Killerdoos references that – I’ve been known to occasionally do make-up special effects. In fact, I had a client come in to the market for a trim and a fake black eye.
A&F: How long have you been doing hair and make up? Do you have a preference?
Killerdoos: I’ve been doing hair for 15 years and make up for 10. I have no preference, I love them both. Asking to decide is like asking which child you love more.
A&F: As far as texture and thickness goes, do you have a “specialty”?
Killerdoos: I’m great with all kinds of hair but people are usually impressed with how I handle thick, curly hair as it is not easy to work with.
A&F: Who are your favorite hair and make-up stylists?
Killerdoos: Nick Arrojo for hair and Hiroshi Yonemoto for make-up.
A&F: What made you decide that setting up shop at Artists & Fleas would be good for your business?
Killerdoos: I have a private studio where I cut hair by appointment, but lack walk-ins. I love being surrounded by artists and creative types. It is inspiring and at the same time, it shows people that hair and make up stylists are true artists, too.
A&F: Spill your favorite tips on hair and make up care and application, please…
Killerdoos: For the girls with curly hair: make sure you are using a cream-based hair product instead of water. The extra moisture keeps curls healthy and looking fabulous. For all hair types: get a fantastic hair cut, even if you are growing it out! As far as make up goes, keep it clean and focus on one feature. Also, don’t forget to touch up throughout the day!
A&F: When will you be back at Artists & Fleas?
Killerdoos: I will be back indefinitely starting August 14th
A&F: Is there anything else you’d like us to know?
Killerdoos: If you aren’t available Saturdays or Sundays, email me at XtineBactine@gmail.com for a private appointment. I offer a wide range of services including manicures and eyebrows.
Killerdoos sets up shop beginning Saturday, August 14th at the indoor Artist, Designer & Vintage Market on North 6th Street from 12-8pm. No appointments necessary. Stop in for a look or a quick consultation.
