Merchant Highlight: Made in Claremont

This husband and wife duo is proof that with a little collaboration and creativity, you can create beautiful things. A lover of arts and crafts, Debra started out making coasters for a local gift shop. Feeling inspired by her husband to take her work to the next level, they combined his love of music and design with her handmade coasters, creating unique coaster sets which they now call Made In Claremont. We sat down with Debra to get the inside scoop about her buzzing business, music, and family.

Made in Claremont

Introduce yourself to the Artists & Fleas community via your favorite musician or band:

I’d have to say Prince without a doubt. The first time I saw him in my twenties was during the Purple Rain tour. Just an amazing performer all around but I really appreciate his musicianship. He wrote everything from music to lyrics and played 14 instruments proficiently. He really was a musical genius.

What inspired you to start Made In Claremont?

My husband inspired me via his love and passion for collecting vinyl. It started as a fluke really because he is a graphic designer and was doing a lot of music re-interpretation prints. He would listen to a song that moved him over and over and then create a graphic interpretation of it. He asked me to make those into mini canvases via a coaster for a local hand made store and that's what started it all.

We also have a son with Cerebral Palsy and I needed a way to make a living and yet still have the flexibility to take him to his many doctors and therapy appointments.

What is one of your favorite coaster sets from your collection?

That is a hard question to answer. I might have to say the Derrick and The Domino’s cover. I also love the Cannonball Adderly in Chicago cover. Both are true works of art. Lastly, I am a fan of the Blue Note album covers and their use of typography.

What attracted you to sell at Artists & Fleas?

Our vendor neighbor from the Rose Bowl CA Crown was exhibiting and he suggested that A&F would be a good fit for our products, so here we are!

Made in Clermont

What advice might you have for anyone looking to get into a similar career?

I think its important to find a craft that you are good at and that you enjoy doing. Additionally doing your homework on pricing and nailing down your target market is crucial. My sales and marketing background has been indispensable for growing and developing this business and it doesn’t hurt to be detailed oriented when it comes to production. I find that customers can always see the quality and time devoted to “Handmades” and are willing to pay for unique well made items.

When you are not busy building your business, what are some things you love to do in your spare time?

I try to exercise 4-5 times per week but when you have your own growing business its pretty much 24/7. Even when just relaxing hanging out at the pool; I’ll hear a song from a playlist and think "Hmm what does that album cover look like?" Or I will harass my husband and ask him to design some new themes for me!

A mantra that you live by:

Life is a journey with a series of adjustments so just roll with it and be happy!

Merchant Highlight: Paper Plane Coffee Co.

Paper Plane Coffee Co.

What do you get when you combine a fifth-generation coffee connoisseur with a dash of edge, style, and entrepreneurial drive? Introducing: Paper Plane Coffee Co. This Pop-Up Coffee Shop has been a top feature at our Williamsburg location for almost a year now, caffeinating customers for a full day of Brooklyn shopping adventures. In addition to Paper Plane's unique brand vision, the addition of fun "mocktail" concoctions to their menu offering sets them apart from industry peers. Founder, head roaster (and one-man show!) Jon sat down with us to tell us more about his business, his go-to coffee order, and what he does when he's not on the (coffee) grind.

Paper Plane Coffee Co.

Introduce yourself to the Artists & Fleas community via your favorite musician or band:

Ufff! Why is this always the toughest question? I've always wondered if some people have a direct answer for this when asked like, "Kenny G! He's my go to in the morning, evening, and even when I dream. The soothing sax breathes wind into the sails of which my life flows" or something like that. Maybe I should have a go to musician as well. Bob Marley, or Cake maybe. My music taste is ever growing. I listen to everything, really.

What inspired you to start Paper Plane Coffee Co.?

Its in my blood... No, really! It's a condition. (laughs) Well, I'm a fifth-generation Colombian coffee grower. We've had our farm in my family for about 70 years, but my great great grandfather was one of the first people to bring coffee to the region where we're from in Colombia. Although my brothers and I were born here in the United States, we would spend our entire summers on our grandparent's farm. I remember waking up at 5am to help my grandfather milk the cows and then after he'd strap on my basket and I'd help collect coffee. On my mother's side, coffee trees literally saved their lives. During the great violence of the 50's and 60's in Colombia the town where they lived was a battleground. They would sometimes have to hide in the coffee fields at night under the coffee trees for safety. The name is a play on words. It comes from the fact that our second farm higher in the plains of the mountain grows eucalyptus for the national paper company. I used to joke and call them the Paper Plains. So underneath the paper plains is where we grow our coffee. All of that combined inspired me to start Paper Plane Coffee Co. I have a debt to pay to coffee.

Paper Plane Coffee Co.

What attracted you to open up your coffee shop at Artists & Fleas?

I found Artists & Fleas to be so attractive. It was inviting and I loved the mantra. There's a really strong creative energy that emanates from it. It's inspiring. Couple that with the fact that, hell, people need coffee. It just seemed like a wonderful pairing.

What do you think sets you apart from other coffee shops in NYC?

Ummmm, well, it can tough to be innovative with coffee. Most people stick to their guns when it comes to their cup of joe. They're comfortable with what they're used to. Dark roasts, milk, sugar, flavored syrups. The run of the mill cafés just try and keep up with whatever the mermaid is doing, others are focused on the third wave of coffee which is lighter roasts, single origins, and a bit of purism. I like to operate in the limbo between the two. Giving people delicious, fresh roasted coffee, while also creating fun concoctions with the beverage to challenge the norms of how we view flavor pairings. One of our most popular drinks, the Rusky, is pretty much a Moscow mule made with espresso instead of vodka. How many other places are you going to get that?

What advice might you have for anyone looking to get into a similar career?

Love it. Love it 100%. Let it be your driving force. Let it excite you every day. Because it can tear you to pieces if you let it. Coffee is so much more than throwing raw beans into a hot skillet till its black, then pulverizing it and brewing it in water.

Paper Plane Coffee Co.

What is your go-to coffee order?

It really all depends on my mood, and if I've eaten anything. I love a really good latte if I'm hungry, or a nice pour over if I've eaten. If I'm thirsty, my go-to is probably the Rusky (Gingerbeer, lime, espresso) my new Hattori Hanzo (jasmine tea, yuzu, and lime soda, with espresso) or the Juan Palmer (brown sugar limeade with espresso).

When you are not busy building your business, what are some things you love to do in your spare time?

Same thing we do every night Pinky, try and take over the world. (laughs) I try to always be creative in my spare time. I've been acting since I was 8, so I still audition for stuff. I primarily do voices now. You may have recently heard me as the voice of a Friskies cat. Other than that, I try and spend time with my girlfriend and her daughter. It gets me away from everything for a bit. It's nice.

A mantra that you live by:

Spread love, be happy. We are all fighting are own unique battles, and the truth is we're not getting out of this alive. So the less of a dick you can be, the better.

Lastly, if you had to choose one song that captures the essence of your business/brand, what would that be?

Probably "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Queen.

Merchant Highlight: Ashley Carson Designs

Ashley Carson Designs

Ashley Carson Designs (ACD) is a true story of a passion turned business. What was merely a personal hobby quickly grew into something more after garnering attention from the jewelry she had designed for herself. Only two years since she’s launched, ACD has been featured in People, Style, Esquire, and Cosmopolitan Magazine, as well as trunk shows throughout New York City. We are thrilled to have Ashley Carson Designs at Artists and Fleas for a 5-week residency: April 2nd-April 22nd in Soho, and April 23rd-May 6th in Chelsea. We sat down with Ashley for a Q&A to discuss music, jewelry, and everything in between.

Ashley Carson Designs

Introduce yourself to the Artists & Fleas community via your favorite musician or band:

It’s so hard to pick just one because I love them all so much! My favorites seem to come and go as much as the seasons. Last year, Santigold and Silversun Pickups were at the top of my playlists; but lately I’ve been throwing it back a bit and listening a lot to Led Zeppelin and Frank Sinatra!

What inspired you to start a jewelry line:

I really could not find what I was looking for on the market, and truthfully just wanted some unique, quality pieces to accessorize my wardrobe with.  Anything I'd find would always turn and tarnish on me, so my frustration is truly what catapulted me to where I am today. I used to make jewelry when I came home from work as an escape from a long day. That passion quickly led me to discovering gold-filled materials and from there my mission blossomed.

What is your favorite jewelry trend at the moment?

I'm really loving long necklaces that are actually designed to be worn both over or under the ensemble.  I love that this trend caters toward women with a busy or active lifestyle. I think a lot of times the reason we don’t wear jewelry is because we're worried it will snag, but layering it under a low cut chunky sweater or chic blazer totally omits this problem!

Ashley Carson Designs

What is your favorite way to style your body chains into everyday wear:

I’m all about the casual, effortless jeans and a t-shirt or sweater look.  I have a body chain complements my classically casual wardrobe because of the way I've tailored it.  I wear it almost every day, even in the winter, and I’ll layer it with 2 or 3 choker/collar necklaces.

A mantra that you live by:

The flower doesn't dream of the bee; the flower blossoms and the bee comes.

What advice might you have for anyone looking to get into a similar career?

Well, first of all, and in any case, your mindset is everything.  But honestly, the best business advice I ever heard was, “what can you do for others that no one else can?”  I take this as, don’t copy what others are doing—you already have something unique to offer the world, and we need you to bring it; but it’s up to you to create it, build it, and show us how it can add value to our lives.

What attracted you to sell at Artists & Fleas?

I love that Artists & Fleas highlights the culture of the city through featuring local independent artists, the network and it’s created, and how it gives local brands the opportunity to showcase their work.

We're so excited to have you in both our Soho and Chelsea locations, what are you looking forward to most during your residency?

Meeting people!  I love sharing what I’ve learned about the properties of the medium I’ve chosen to work with (14k gold filled), and how it’s really added value to my life since I can lead my active lifestyle without having to worry about tarnishing jewelry.  When I’m at my trunk shows or in my shop, I love that I can help my customer by getting to know her, working with her one on one, and by styling her in jewelry that best complements her lifestyle.

Lastly, if you had to choose one song that captures the essence of your business/brand, what would that be?

There is something about the song “She Sells Sanctuary.”  It’s by the band The Cult, however, I recently reconnected with it via Rogue Wave, who covered it, and I love their version of it too! And I actually got to see perform in NYC last week!  As a brand that encourages women to elegantly express their femininity, my take on this song is something that the men who wrote this song find sanctuary in just that.

Metrix Jewelry
Metrix Jewelry was founded by Lisa Mignoli, a New Yorker and FIT graduate who takes inspiration from geometric shapes - one of the few things that will always remain constant in a city that’s in a constant state of motion. She takes comfort in the consistent nature of geometry, because a triangle will always be a triangle and a square will always have four sides. Lisa loves to combine materials that aren’t usually put together, making for a truly unique collection of jewelry that is a mix of funky and futuristic. You’re sure to find a special piece that will become a staple in your jewelry arsenal.
