Artists & Eats: Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs

Screen Shot 2018-02-14 at 3.45.45 PM.png

Building on 15 years of helping artisanal businesses launch and grow, Artists & Fleas is hosting a special event in New York City on March 3rd. "Artists & Eats: Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs" will feature more than twenty female-founded food businesses selling unique, delicious, handcrafted food and beverage products throughout the day.

Although admission is free, donations are encouraged to support Emma's Torch, a woman-founded non profit in New York, which provides culinary training to refugees. Anyone donating more than $10 will receive an Artists & Fleas branded tote bag containing special gifts as a thank you.

Emma's Torch founder, Kerry Brodie, is thrilled to be involved in this celebration of female food entrepreneurs: "We are so grateful for the fundraising support and the opportunity to make more people aware of our refugee-focused culinary program. Our students will be on hand as well--so people can personally taste what they can do!"

Visitors will find a variety of food offerings at the event, ranging from Call Me Caramel’s delectable gruyere cheese caramels, Yu Bakery’s yucca puffs, Jessie’s Nutty Cups’ creatively flavored peanut butter cups, and Calcutta Kitchens’ premium Indian simmer sauces.

'Scorch' by David Friedman for Artists & Fleas Gallery

OPENING RECEPTION: January 25th, 6-9PM

Artists & Fleas is proud to present "Scorch," an exhibition by artist David Friedman at the Artists & Fleas in Soho from 1/25 - 2/4/18, with an opening reception Thursday, 1/25 from 6-9pm. This is the first show of the 'Scorch' series and the inaugural exhibition at Artists & Fleas in the heart of Soho.

Artists & Fleas in Soho is located in a landmark building at the corner of Broadway & Prince. This location has historically been home to many important galleries. Artists & Fleas is excited to continue this tradition by showcasing Friedman's work.

In Friedman’s "Scorch" series, industrial materials, pigments and fire shape delicate and bold forms into cinematic, psychedelic dreamscapes. He layers washes of smoke on canvas, leather, paper and wood to scar, stain and stress the physical singularity of each object. He will often push a work to the brink of destruction by riddling it with holes or burning away at it so that its near obliteration is a partner in its making. Physicality has been a consistent theme in Friedman’s artistic practice. He has engaged traditional and nontraditional canvases, such as animal hides, paper towels, x-ray film, foam rubber and found books.

Friedman’s works have been shown in galleries and alternative spaces, including PS 122, the DUMBO Art Center, the NY Studio Gallery, Angel Orensanz Center, Dieu Donne and others. He has received multiple awards, including being nominated for a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. He received his MFA from Brooklyn College and BA in Fine Arts from Brandeis University. Friedman currently lives on the Lower East Side, where his studio is at the Clemente Arts and Cultural Center.

Discover David Friedman at Artists & Fleas in Soho starting 1/25.

For more information on David and his works, follow him on Instagram @fryfryfried.

Meet Sasha Alsberg & Lindsay Cummings

Friday, 1/19 from 6:30-9pm

Join us at the Artists & Fleas in Soho as Sasha and Lindsay talk about and sign their book. Swing by between 6:30PM and 7:30PM for a "space make over"! The talk will begin at 8:00PM. Get your tickets here!

Sasha and Lindsay have been immersed in the literary world for years, building a community in BookTube; now they have decided to embark on a journey together with the launch of their new book series with the Zenith.

Zenith tells the story of Androma Racella, a powerful mercenary whose reign of terror has earned her the nickname of the Bloody Baroness. However, to the all-female crew aboard her starship, she’s just Andi, their friend and fearless leader. But when a routine mission goes awry, the crew is tested as they find themselves in a dangerous situation—and at the mercy of a sadistic bounty hunter from Andi’s past.

Meanwhile, across the galaxy, a ruthless ruler waits in the shadows, biding her time to get revenge for the annihilation of her people.

Andi and her crew embark on a dangerous, soul-testing journey that could restore order to their ship—or just as easily start a war that will devour worlds. As Andi's ship hurtles toward the unknown, and the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, the only certainty is that no one can be trusted.

MATTHEW “LEVEE” CHAVEZ: SIGNS OF HOPE @ ARTISTS & FLEAS

Signs of Hope

In the days after the 2016 presidential election, New Yorkers from all wakes of life were left alienated, fearful, dejected and bereft of hope and national pride. One artist sought to try and soothe the collective broken spirit of New York. In the greatest equalizing space of the city, Matthew "Levee" Chavez provided an outlet for the people in the form of post-it notes, sharpies, and an enormous amount of wall space.

Come join us at the Strand Artists & Fleas kiosk to celebrate the launch of Signs of Hope: Messages from Subway Therapy
