Viva la Independencia! That indie spirit is alive and strong this holiday weekend so grab a partner and come on down to get your fix. We've got some exciting new talent lined up on North 6th Street ready and fired up. (Yes, pun intended).

CR. COCORO is a new design team collective appearing this Saturday. Susie Lee, Boo Youn Choi and Sam Lee are the creative powerhouse behind the work. Sam brings computer graphic experience to the realm of the wearable in one-of-a-kind t-shirts. Boo is a full time fashion design major student in FIT and is featuring lovely original designs as well as some of her vintage items (clothings, shoes, bags, and accessories). Fashion industry insider Susie Lee showcases her wide array of pleated skirts and simple dresses. For further information about Sam's illustrations visit his website. Here is Boo's Website for images of her garments. We absolutely love these creative collectives!

Meowmeow Also on Saturday, be sure to check out Meow Meow Tweet  - an artist-run handmade soap and wares company located in Brooklyn. They take the art of soap-making - inside and out - to new heights with their fetching packaging and wrappings inspired by things in their day-to-day lives as Brooklynites and scent combinations influenced and inspired by the spirit of local goodness.

Lanna Lanna NYC  offers a variety of handmade leather sandals for Women and Men. The designs draw inspiration from Northern Thailand and India and are carefully constructed in SouthEast Asia taking cues from life in NYC. They join us Sunday.

Come out and celebrate the long lazy weekend a bit in the 'Burg with us. We've got plenty to make you celebrate.

Shepard    Sewing bean

Appropriately-named Urban Alchemist (pictured above, left) is on a tear recently with press mentions and pick-ups feeding the creative fire as creator Rebecca Shepherd creates these one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by everything under the sun. We're tickled to have her at A&F this Saturday.

And while we're riffing on the whole idea of "time", be certain to check out some of the finds that our tight crew of vintage collectors have in store for you. While you're about your normal weekday life, these folks are combing the universe in search of the most amazing pieces looking to have their stories told and re-told. What's New From Who @ McCarren

Gnorasaurus  A little love to go around this weekend at the Market in McCarren after all the bummer weather and even bummier news about MJ. Nothing to pick you up like a stroll in the park and some thrilling finds to be procured at the hands of some creative and artistic dynamos strutting their stuff.

Start it off with handmade, one-of-a-kind tees, onesies and bags for people big and small care of Gnorasaurus. There's a bit of magic to be found in each piece that creative mastermind Kathy and her monkey muse Nora work up - "recycling" some classic concepts from the 1950s and 1960s and giving them new life in the next generation of trendsetters this side of the East River.

Newcomer Zoe Accessories has the fine tradition of jewelry-making in her blood drawing inspiration at a young age from the treasure trove of leftover beads, metals & stones that lay around her grandparents' basement from their Roger Van S line of accessories during the second half of the last century. These amazing creations all beg to be touched, worn and shared (pictured below, right). Zoe

Kim Last Designs enters the fray with pieces that reflect the modern American girl. Youthful and chic, vibrant and organic, delicate and playful - this debut collection has a lot of appeal to make you go yeah-yeah (below, center).

Rounding out the crew of fabulous fashionistas are Eun Biee Jung Jewelry's breathtaking objects of wearable art (see below, left) Golden Plum Designs and Ximena Designs - jewels, rings, sarongs and more. Oh my!

Vendor of the Week: JuanaNYC

When Artists & Fleas first threw open it's doors in December 2003, the goal was to give the creative community a place to set up shop and meet their market. It was a place to create community and to give the local community a constantly changing place to hang out, check out and shop. Thousands of local artists, designers and collectors have called Artists & Fleas home at one point in time since 2003. And so in keeping with our tradition of getting people to meet their market and know the story behind the products, we've recently launched our Vendor of the Week (VOTW) feature (sign up for our weekly email blast on the right). What follows is this week's VOTW - the superfine power sisters that are the brains and spirit behind JuanaNYC

Juananyc 2

How did you get started?

I started this project with my sister, we both love fashion and we’re always looking for alternatives to what’s out there for us.  We have both lived in Argentina and travel there often and we noticed the styles and the colors are like nothing in New York.  Buenos Aires is one of the most fashionable cities in Latin America and there are so many great independent designers!  We had to bring a little of the style we love from there to Brooklyn.

How do you describe your business?

Our business is a celebration of where we come from. We believe that colors and patterns brighten your life. The garments are a unique experience, they are rarely re-created exactly the same way. Most of the designs we carry are unique pieces of clothing-designed from vintage, and patchwork fabric.

How long have you been doing it?

We started about a year ago—but we’ve always been surrounded by fashion, our grandparents were designers and our father also worked in the industry.

How did you learn to design?

We’re both mostly self taught - our grandparents were really helpful in teaching us the basics when we were younger. Right now our clothing is all from Argentine designers, once we get our website down we’ll start bringing in some of our designs.

Where do you seek inspiration when creating new designs?

Let’s just say we’re inspired by literature and the passion of the Romantics, there is something really eye opening in the words of Emerson---this is just a taste of what is to come on our website and in our designs!

What’s the most significant accomplishment since you started the business?

I think it has to be when one of our dresses made it to the Vienna Biennale.  A local street-artist, revolutionary, Swoon purchased one of our dresses, she was part of a team of 30 Brooklyn artists to travel to the Biennale on trash containers, it was so radical and outrageous, we’re really motivated by people who want to make change.

What are the plans and hopes for the year to come?

We’re definitely going to have an online store very soon---before the fall season begins.  And we’re very excited to present all of our new funky, fun lingerie.  We hope to continue the relationships that we’ve made with our customers, we’re grateful for their loyalty so far and we promise that there are some great things coming ahead.  We’d love to have our stuff carried in some local boutiques and in other markets.

JuanaNYC can be found at Artists & Fleas Indoor Artist & Designer Market every Saturday and Sunday 12-8pm or online at www.juananyc.com/index.html while they renovate their website.
