Any vintage thrill-seeker and vintage hunter knows that scoring something at an area flea market, tag sale or estate sale is really just the end of a long journey for that priceless item. Ricky Becker has been obsessed with the thril of the find since growing up in Milwaukee where he got his first taste of vintage chic. He has deep deep roots in the Manhattan vintage scene and his Spooky Boutique has been a mainstay at Artists & Fleas over the years, culling his craft with a network of friends that includes market veterans Malin Landaeus, Any Old Iron and others who are influential on the scene.
Artists & Fleas: Tell us about your collection.
Spooky: I’m inspired by old school glamour, really antique pieces and crazy prints. Vintage for me is about fantasy and history
A&F: What was the catalyst for your passion for vintage
Spooky: I was in high school and we did “Bye Bye Birdie” and tons of vintage was donated to our school as costumes. After the show was over, there beautiful pieces were left in a giant pile on the floor of a room. I took it upon myself to hang, sort, repair and organize the mess. I also love history and design.
A&F: Do you have a favorite era for clothing?
Spooky: My favorite era would be Victorian, because of all the details, but I love interesting designs from every era.
A&F: How did you get to be so fabulous?
Spooky: I am certifiably insane!
A&F: What is your favorite part about selling at Artists & Fleas?
Spooky: My passion for vintage is matched by working every weekend with an amazing group of artists and designers who are also dear friends. I consider myself so fortunate to make my living doing what I love.
A&F: Any fashion tips you couldn’t live without?
Spooky: Honey – it’s all about the mumu! Belt it, knot it, cinch it or let it flow loose!
A&F: I have to ask you about the wolverine…
Spooky: It belonged to my grandfather. Michael, my boyfriend, hates it so I brought it to my booth to keep me company. It reminds me of Wisconsin where I grew up and has a snarl that recalls my late, great father. Her name is Winafred wolverine.
A&F: Do you do custom pieces for people?
Spooky: Michael and I had the opportunity to make some clothing for Kelly Roland for her new video “Commander”.
Ricky Becker is constantly scouring the planet in search of ways to make you fabulous. He is tireless in his commitment to bringing in new merch every week. Check out Spooky Boutique at Artists & Fleas N. 6th Street every SATURDAY and SUNDAY, 12-8pm.
