Put the Needle on the Record

There are countless call-outs to the DJ. Hey, Mister DJ. Play it, kick it. Spinning vinyl and laying down the tracks has been a fundamental part of the market experience since Day 1 when Koi Market kids Jesse & Steph first showed up slinging sushi, hot sake and Afro-beat and '70s soul. Fast-forward and we're back. And now we're doing it 7 days a week as part of our Spring pop-up at Chelsea Market. We kicked off the month of May with a bit of a refresh. Shake off those cobwebs and kick up some dust. Remodel we must. And the DJ booth is front and center as a tower of power with a wicked and wild crew that includes some legit folks on the scene, including Boogaloo badass DJ Turmix, The Kings of Karaoke's Nithya Rajendran and DJ TruTones.

Got vinyl, 8-tracks, or MP3s? Come play with us.

Manhattan-Bound 2.0

It's officially official: we're bringing a bit of the best of Brooklyn back to Chelsea Market in Manhattan this Spring. We return to the wonderful space we previously occupied beneath the High Line on the corner of 10th Avenue for a combined maker's market, retail pop-up and concept shop in time for the Spring season. This time around, the curated collection of designers, artists and vintage collectors holds in store several exciting new additions to the market all built around the theme of showcasing emerging collections, makers and brands and bringing them to market. Newcomers include Om Aroma & Co., designer Cora NY, Cherry Vintage and some revamped collections for the season from notable designers Ava Hu of Ava Love, Cynthia Rybakoff, FSMNYC, NatureVsFuture and many others. Click here for a list of participants and mark your calendars for March 1st to join us for our return to Chelsea Market.

Love For Sale: V-Day Designer Sale & Fundraiser

It's always good to give and to get. In the spirit of that idea, we invite you to come shop this weekend's Love For Sale designer event. It's shopping (and a DJ Karaoke bonus on Saturday - see below) for a cause: over 20 participating designers and vintage collectors are contributing a portion of proceeds to God's Love We Deliver. Spooky Boutique's Ricky Becker has transformed a part of the market into a red room, merchandising the works of participating artists, designers and vintage collectors including: Georgia Varidakis Jewelry, FSMNYC, QP & Monty, The Indie Style Society, shopshmata, Cora NY, Treat Me Bath & Body, Bibi Doan Designs, Leroy's Place, ASTALI and a dozen more bringing select items of fashion jewelry, classic vintage threads (Pendleton shirts for men, Chanel jackets for women and more goodies) and gifts for the Valentine's Day holiday.

The fun starts on Saturday at 10AM and runs throughout the market day until Sunday 7PM at 70 North 7th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Neighborhood DJ Karaoke superstars The Kings of Karaoke host a free Saturday night special warm-up from 5pm-8pm. So come on down, get your karaoke on and show some love.

2 Turntables & a Microphone

Since Day 1, DJs have worked the market, spinning tunes to set the vibe and help shape the market experience. It's not a club. But it's not a lame soundtrack at retail. It's fresh, live and real-time. As the Brooklyn and beyond obsession with classic vinyl has waxed and waned and waxed anew, so too has our motley crew of spinners and mixers. The early days saw 2 diehard and hard-partying DJs-turned-gallerists-turned-shopkeeps hold it down every Sunday. Stef and Jesse ran Koi Market on Havemeyer and they used to roll in a little after 12pm with their monstrous speakers and hot sake, spinning a mix of retro classics, funk and R&B. Then came FutureFunk aka DJ Sportjacket, one of the most rockingest collectors of reggae and funk, one half of the duo behind Grand Street's Lucky Cat.

Some DJs have gone on to fame. Others live in infamy. Some are avid collectors and fans of the rare grooves. Some are just lovers of music, eager to take advantage of a day-time gig to spin and share what they love most.

We've come full circle. And this year promises to kick things up a notch. Beginning this month, we'll be bringing in 2 DJs each weekend market day in Williamsburg for 2 sets. It's a way for guys and gals to play master of the vibe, share their passions and have some fun without the hassle of being in a bar taking those 3AM requests from drunk fools.

If you like to spin, have an itch to scratch or know someone who has what it takes, hit us up via @artistsandfleas.
