MARKET LEADER (INDUSTRY CITY, BROOKLYN) – FULL TIME

Artists & Fleas is looking for an entrepreneurial individual to oversee the curation, merchant recruitment, operations and shopper experience of our newest market concept– Artists & Fleas Showplace– debuting in Industry City this summer. This is an A-to-Z position for an innovative thinker with a sharp curatorial eye who is intuitive, creative, driven, and a natural-born problem solver to help launch and grow this exciting new business concept. 

The Artists & Fleas Showplace @ Industry City will be open to the public as a marketplace on Saturdays & Sundays. During the week, merchants can utilize the space as a showroom for private appointments, as a studio space for creating products or a place to hold events. In addition, an adjoining cafe, record shop, and community space will be open Monday through Sunday. 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Identify trends and manage the curation and overall maker mix
  • Recruit & prospect makers, designers & collectors  
  • Support and consult with makers to help grow their businesses
  • Steward the overall market and brand experience  

This exciting leadership role requires you to manage and drive a business unit while creating a warm, welcoming and supportive community for makers and an inspired shopping experience for market visitors and shoppers. This is a dynamic opportunity for an individual who:

You will use your research and knowledge of fashion and design trends with a buyer-meets-curator perspective to recruit and prospect makers who will be successful in this marketplace. You will need to have a deep understanding of Industry City’s demographics and visitors to best create and manage a large pipeline of existing and future makers. You will utilize business development skills to think broadly and creatively to identify, engage and support new and existing makers along with traditional sales skills to negotiate and confirm new bookings.

A key aspect of the Market Leader role is to demonstrate a high-touch client service attitude in facilitating a supportive environment for the maker community. This specifically requires a consultative approach to help creators grow – grow their businesses, develop their marketing – while providing insights from the broader Artists & Fleas community. Paramount in all of this is to have a finger on the pulse of the market while being tuned in to the larger industry zeitgeist in pursuit of delivering an exciting weekly shopping experience. You will have room to be creative and make improvements to the experience to ensure an inspired and unparalleled shopping experience for all who come to sell and shop. This includes working with our internal marketing team to create programming and events that showcase and support the maker community.

The Market Leader also oversees all on-site operations with the support of the local market team. This may include a Community Manager, Cafe Manager, Production Assistant, DJs and supporting team members (street marketers, brand ambassadors & maintenance personnel). 

The Market Leader reports to the Director of Markets and is responsible for reaching market occupancy goals as outlined prior to each season. The Market Leader works with other NYC Market Leaders to strategically pass merchant leads across marketplaces and divide and conquer recruiting efforts across NYC and beyond. 

We are looking for someone who is a creative and strategic thinker and has a proven track record of sales success that includes lead generation, outreach, relationship building and negotiations. Sales or buying experience in a showroom, retailer, tradeshow, and/or market is required. To be successful in this role, you must be a problem solver, have a high energy level and be self-motivated, goal-oriented and extremely organized.  

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are required. Technically, you need to be proficient in all MS Office Programs, Google Docs and all social media channels.

Compensation package to include annual salary + compensation bonus, health insurance, paid vacation and sick days, 401K and an opportunity to work with a great team and a growing organization. Your schedule will require you to be onsite at the marketplace on weekends and at either the marketplace or HQ in Soho during the week.
