How did your business get started?

Prior to becoming an artist, I was an Emmy Award-nominated director, camerawoman and producer. While filming a History Channel series in the Amazon in 2013, I was seriously injured in a boat accident. I spent over two years recovering from injuries and surgeries.

It was during this dark period that I fell back in love with drawing and painting, and I soon found this creative outlet to be an indispensable part of the healing process. I decided to switch careers, and founded Lemon Zesty in 2017 with the motto “Fresh Art With A Sour Twist.” I consider my art to be an homage to optimism, second chances and the power of humor.

How do you make your products?
I draw or paint original art, and then transfer the designs to art prints and mugs (which I print myself), or to tote bags.

What inspires your craft?
I keep a Notes app in my phone for ideas. I’m inspired by nature, animals, the city, my cat Patches, bad puns, overheard conversations, and the human experience. Nothing is too weird!

What’s your favorite product?
My favorite product at the moment is my “Pigeon with French Fry Satchel” art print, because I relate strongly to his vibe, both as a New Yorker and a French Fry aficionado. Even though he’s a tourist in Times Square, he still seems carefree and happy, which is how I feel most of the time in the city!

Why do you sell at Artists & Fleas?
I love the opportunity to sell my work in person rather than just online, and I appreciate the flexibility of being able to try out different seasons and booth spaces. It’s so helpful to get instant feedback from customers so that I can plan my future creations. I’m also inspired by the other vendors and have made many friends there over the years!
